Instagram Beer Booze History

Who would have thought that a humble pint of ale could have such a profound impact on the digital landscape? Yet, beer played a pivotal role in the rise of Instagram, a platform that has transformed the way we connect, share, and experience the world.

Instagram was originally a check-in app for great whiskey spots

The well know story if the app us that all began in 2010, when two friends, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, sought to create a mobile app that celebrated the beauty of photography. They envisioned a space where users could share their favorite moments without the clutter of text-heavy social networks. Within the first day, the app had 25,000 new users, a number that rose to a million within a month. Today, Instagram boast over 1,000 pictures per second.

But that wasn’t the plan. Original, Kevin’s revolutionary idea was a bit different : app to check-in for great whisky spots and share pictures. At the time, Systrom was still a graduate at Standford and had developped a passion for great whsky as well as photography. The pictures on the app were meant to be just a bonus to incentivise the check-in function.

The app was not nearly as popular as Instagram. Systrom later admitted that Burbn was a false start. To be fair, it is not that the app was a failure – it did lay the groundwork for the behemoth Instagram – but it was overly complicated and users weren’t interested in the whole check-in concept. What Systrom did note, however, was the huge potential of easy, expedient photo-sharing.

But beer’s influence on Instagram went beyond just the product itself. The craft beer scene often revolved around a specific aesthetic – a celebration of good times, good company, and good food. This aesthetic was perfectly captured by the filters and editing tools available on Instagram.

From the early days of sharing photos of your favorite beers to the rise of beer-centric influencers and the countless beer-themed Instagram accounts, beer has been a driving force behind the platform’s success. It’s a testament to the power of community, the appeal of visual storytelling, and the enduring love of a good pint.
